Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Olga's Raid on Copal

Post by Admin Sun Jun 07, 2015 10:26 pm

The goblin raiders slipped through the murky swamp waters in near total darkness, only the faint light of the half-moon seeping through the tree branches to light the way. They intended to ambush the lizardfolk in their homes, to burn the village of Copal to the ground and be on their way before the lizards knew any better.

But as stealthy as they were, the goblins were strangers to this land, and the murky swamp was not friendly to their stature. They arrived in the early morning instead of the dead of night, as they had planned, and the ruckus of two thousand goblins moving through the swamp had provided enough warning for the lizardfolk to rally to arms and send for aid from the next village down the river.

In a stroke of luck the goblins could not have predicted, the Tikal Hero Camaxtli was in Copal at the time, and swiftly took command of the defenders. The levies were poorly trained and equipped compared to the goblin raiders, but this would still be a fight, rather than the easy slaughter the goblins had hoped.

Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Re: Olga's Raid on Copal

Post by AspenIvan Mon Jun 08, 2015 6:52 pm

The High Goblins wasted no time preparing their advance.  The Grandmaster knew the Hayani infantry were just militiafolk, so there would be no elaborate maneuvers.  They tightened ranks, formed a spear and shield wall, and started marching.  First Immortal Olga Nakbaji lead the advance personally, while the farmers' trained dogs followed close behind.

Further back, one-thousand Toreyani professionals prepared their crossbows.  They took the time to tie cloths onto their bolts and dip them in oil, and on the signal they would set their projectiles alight and fire.  The signal would be the war-cries of the militia, marking the point at which the spears were about thirty meters from the lizards.  The Toreyani would then rely on their discipline and long training to loose their volley ahead of the mass into the enemy center.

A volley of flaming bolts, then the Hayani would release the war-dogs, and then the charge would hit.  That is, if all went according to plan.

____

-- Hayani Infantry form spear-shield wall and advance towards enemy infantry.  About thirty meters from the Tikalan line, they will release their dogs and charge. Grandmaster Olga Nakbaji (HERO) personally leads the advance.

-- Toreyani Guards prepare volley to coincide with the beginning of the charge.  (Will fire early and suppress enemy archers if situation changes significantly.)

Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Re: Olga's Raid on Copal

Copal.

The village had a tragic history. This was not the first time it had been under threat. In the First Age, before the goblins, it had been the warm blooded humans whom had burnt it to the ground. In the Second Age, it had succumbed to rampaging hordes of demons unleashed by the power of the portal. Yet still the descendants of the original inhabitants hung on, stubbornly rebuilding it, and refusing to rename it. A thumb in the eye of Taraba, the goblins, and whomever else desired to destroy the Lizardfolk.

It seemed fate had put the village in its crosshairs once again. Camaxtli however was determined that Copal would not be abandoned to be put to the goblin sword and torch, instead it would be defended! The Tikalan champion had been guarding the sacred shrine until the High Council had decided upon its fate. Upon hearing news of the goblin advance, he had quickly armed every lizard male whom could hold a sword and sent for aid both from the capital and the nearby village of Quetza.

A force of four thousand had responded. Most of these troops were green as the jungle leaves. Some were old and carried ancient swords that had not seen use in decades, others were young, barely old enough to be out of the hatcheries and looked to the battle with a mixture of excitement and fear. Yet there were a few veterans from the Sotekan legions that Camaxtli could count upon to steady the young ones and keep them in line.

'' Folk of Copal and Quetza! The Goblin's come to destroy your homes and slay your families! Only you stand between them and the knife! Have faith in yourselves, in your kinfolk, and in our Divine Lord Citalmlin! '' Camaxtli roared. A cheer greeted him, but Camaxtli knew that they were but words..He would need more than words to defeat the wicked greenskins, he would to call upon his God. The winds of power called and the warrior priest beckoned towards the Heavens...

----------------------------------------------------

Upon their advance towards the village, the goblins would find the route curiously absent of lizards to charge. There was no sign of the Lizardfolk. Perhaps they had fled, run away into the swamps to hide from the goblins wrath? No. Instead the Lizards waited... blending in with the surrounding swamp and its foilage, like chameleons absorbing into the brown and the green as if they were part of the earth itself. Arrows were being nocked and spears readied for the decisive moment....

Somewhere a horn blew. It was the signal. The villagers were merely that...they were not trained for massed volleys. But, many of them had been hunting in these swamps since they had hatched. A goblin army struggling to advance in the muck of the swamp was little challenge. When the horn blew, the archers began hammering the advance force of the goblins. They were unarmored and ripe to be picked off.

It was bound to cause confusion. Where were the lizards firing from? How many were there? It wasn't the end. With a roar, the villagers rose up, armed with spear and shield. Camaxtli was no coward. He was brave, ruthless, and lead from the front. While he lacked his brothers brains, he more than made up for it with brawn. His charge into the goblin ranks was a powerful one. His massive war axe split shields and cut through flesh, while his spiked tail lashed out to impale, maim, and break bone.

'' FOR CITALMLIN! '' He roared from bloodied lips and the cry was taken up by hundreds of throats. Meanwhile, the lizardmen were using their superior numbers to lap around the flanks of the Hayani and split their formation. The archers in turn attempted to suppress the Toreyani guards. While they weren't accurate as their goblin counterparts, their bows meant that they could fire faster, and hopefully keep the greenskins heads down.

SUMMARY:

-- Camaxtli casts CAMOFLAGUE on the Tikalan force. (4 Divinity) He attaches himself to the spearmen and leads them.

-- The archers target the unarmored Hayani Infantryman with two initial volleys from cover. Camaxtli, hoping to cause panic and fear, follows up with a surprise assault by the infantry. The conscripts use their superior numbers to attempt to overwhelm the Hayani line.

-- Once the two sides are engaged, the archers will begin focusing their fire on the Toreyani to keep them suppressed.

ADDITIONAL BONUSES:

Camaxtli: Bonus to resisting fear effects

Natural Deity: No movement penalties in swamp

Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Re: Olga's Raid on Copal

Post by Admin Mon Jun 08, 2015 9:43 pm

The goblins advanced warily through the swamp, ready and eager to slaughter lizardfolk and burn down their homes in the name of the Saints. They slogged through the mud, coming upon the empty lizardfolk village. For a moment there was nervous confusion. Where were the lizardfolk? Then, with a twang and a shout, the battle began.

Disjointed volleys of arrows burst from the bushes and swamps on either side of the goblins. Although badly aimed and done they nontheless sowed fear and panic within the line as goblins cried out in confusion. Then the lizardfolk spearmen charged, surprise and ferocity making up for lack of skill and weapons. They slammed into the side of the Hayani and the goblin militia dissolved in an instant. Some fought and died, some tripped, some ran into the trees, some back toward the Toryani. Ironically it was the Hayani's dogs who fought the best, tackling and biting at lizardmen while their masters fled for their lives. Olga Nakbaji was forced to flee back into her own lines as the goblins behind her dropped their weapons and fled.

The Toryani crossbows, however, were not about to wait for the lizardfolk to finish their allies and charge upon them. Ignoring the arrows whizzing about them they steadily lit their bolts, aimed, and released their crossbows directly into the flank of the lizardfolk spearmen. With a chorus of clunks, snaps and screams dozens of villagers fell dead. Others burned. The villagers from Quetza turned and fled rather than endure the volley, but the lizardfolk of Copal were made of sterner stuff. Lead by Camaxtli and flush with victory, they held their ground.

Summary:
Hayani goblins break and flee to safety.
Quetzan Spear levies break and flee to safety.
52 Hayani goblins killed or wounded.
All wardogs killed or wounded
382 Lizardman spearmen killed or wounded.

Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Re: Olga's Raid on Copal

Post by AspenIvan Mon Jun 08, 2015 10:31 pm

Grandmaster Olga, back at the Toreyani rear line, surveyed the field with some concern.  The situation was a mess, but not irrevocably so.  Victory could still be snatched from the jaws of a temporary defeat.  She made her way to the back of the formation, passing some orders to the regimental commander along the way.  The crossbows would split into two groups: One company of two-hundred would spread out to the sides, beyond the scope of the lizard advance to snipe down enemy commanders.  The rest would continue to focus their fire at the enemy center with mass volleys.  The more the high goblins could damage enemy cohesion, the better.

Once behind the crossbows, the Grandmaster withdrew a horn from her belt and sounded it before shouting, "Hayani to me!  Rally to your leader and march to victory!"  From there Olga continued to alternate between sounding the horn and calling out to her routing soldiers, running from one edge of the Toreyani block to the other to cover as much ground with her voice as possible.

If the Hayani spears could reform in the relative safety of the Toreyani rear, they could advance again (or the Toreyani could fall back) and present a wall to shield the crossbows.  A nigh-impenetrable defensive formation, at least against the simple conscripts Tikal was fielding here.  And from there, they could beat back the lizards and make a steady march to victory.

__________

-- Crossbows split into 200 "skirmishers," moving to the sides and aiming to snipe enemy commanders and other figures of importance, and 800 who stand their ground and keep hammering the enemy center.

-- Grandmaster Olga Nakbaji (HERO) tries to rally the Hayani Infantry behind the Toreyani.  If successful, she will integrate them with the Toreyani in a shieldwall/crossbow formation to beat back the Tikalans.  If, then, the Tikalans retreat or refuse to engage, the new formation will make a steady advance to shatter the lizard army and destroy/loot the village.

-- If Hayani do not reform or too few rally to her, the Grandmaster will sound a general retreat, depending on her troops' superior physical training and discipline to outrun their pursuers.  In such a case, the "skirmisher" crossbows will cover the retreat if necessary.

Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Re: Olga's Raid on Copal

Post by killer spork Mon Jun 08, 2015 11:05 pm

Camaxtli hacked the fleeing goblin down, the blow from shoulder to navel nearly bisecting the greenskin. The situation was fluid and subject to change. The Quetzan's had fled under the pressure of the Goblin volley and now they desperately tried to reload. The one problem with the Forgehall strategy was the obvious: Camaxtli and his men were dangerously close to the Toreyani line and he wasn't about to allow them the chance to reform and reorganize amidst the chaos as they desperately attempted to load more bolts into their crossbows.

'' WARRIORS OF TIKAL! WITH ME! '' The villagers at his side were hardly warriors but the words were meant to bolster their morale. They had sent the Goblins running like dogs and were on the cusp of victory. Now they only had to seize it! His axe soaked with blood, the spearmen used their shields as cover as they advanced straight into the teeth of the Goblin formation, the massive champion of Citamlin's leading the way once more for a final charge.

Yet the spearmen weren't Camaxtli's only weapons in this fight. Two thousand bowman provided covering fire for Camaxtli's advance, the goblin crossbowman were so packed together for the purpose of firing volleys that the Copal-Quetzan arrows were bound to find their mark. The massive lizardman Camaxtli slammed forward into the Toreyani, his axe licking out to find flesh. With the spearmen engaged in a melee and the Hayani (hopefully) having retreated back towards their ships, it would leave the remaining goblins dangerous exposed.

The bowman would continue to pepper the Goblin's with arrows before dropping their own bows and exchanging for handweapons. Obsidian knives, short swords, hand axes, anything that the villagers had scavenged was brought forward. Camaxtli intended to bury the goblin rearguard under a mountain of scales. With a roar leaping from their throats, the camoflagued bowman emerged from cover and swarmed towards the goblin rear and flank, hoping to add to the confusion and chaos. Nearly three thousand lizardman would engage the beleaguered Forgehall rearguard.

SUMMARY:

-- Camaxtli orders a charge on the Toreyani lines whom are extremely close to the Tikalan's, with his remaining spearmen before they can proper re-organize into a shield wall.

-- The Quetzan-Copalan bowman attempt to suppress the Toreyani, focusing all of their fire on them as Camaxtli charges. The hope is to keep them disorganized and suppressed. Once battle is joined between the spearmen and the Toreyani, the archers will drop their bows and engage the remaining goblins with hand weapons, swarming from their hiding places into the Toreyani rear and flanks in the hopes of causing them to flee.

-- If Quetzan spearmen rally, they will re-engage in the massive melee in the hopes of driving the goblins back.

Olga's Raid on Copal Empty Re: Olga's Raid on Copal

Post by Admin Tue Jun 09, 2015 12:08 am

The lizardfolk charged forward, roaring in triumph. The archers threw down their bows and rushed toward the flank while the infantry headed into the center. They smashed into the Toryani line and there was chaos. Spears, claws, knives, axes. In the intense melee there was no room for finesse. The goblins gave a good account of themselves, fighting with furious skill as they tried to kill as many as they could. But although each goblin was a match for two lizardfolk, they were outnumbered three to one, and in danger of being surrounded.

With the Toryani wavering and the Hayani still disorganized, Olga ordered the retreat. The goblins fell back steadily and in good order, creating a line of defense. Camaxtli, seeing the goblins escaping despite all his efforts, made a personal effort to break the line. He smashed into the Toryani, sending several goblins flying as he cleaved one in twain. Then he faced Olga Nakbaji. Camaxtli drove his spear straight through her chest armor, only to gape in shock as she ignored the wound and slammed a warhammed into his shoulder, dislocating it and leaving a horrid welt. The lizardman reeled back; His hand closed over a fallen spearhead. He jumped forward, feinted right and dodged another hammer-blow, thrusting forward with the blade, which managed to slice across her side, but drew no blood. Olga stepped into his guard and brought the hammer across, slamming it into his lower leg, which shattered with a sickening snap and sent him reeling backward.

There was no time to finish him in the rush of retreat, but the lizardfolk rallied around their leader and did not continue the pursuit.

------------------------------------------------
Summary:
Olga Nakbaji gains +I Warrior rank
Camaxtli gains the trait Grievously Wounded: -III Warrior ranks for the next 2 turns
435 Lizardman Spearmen died
12 Lizardman archers die
61 Hayani Goblins die
72 Toryani Goblins die
78 Goblins captured
The goblin raid is repulsed
